This page explains exactly how Rock Kitchen researches, compares and ranks kitchen gear. We want you to understand where our recommendations come from — and what their limits are.
Research, Not Marketing
Our buying guides are research-based editorial evaluations. Unless an article explicitly states that we used a product ourselves, we have not run hands-on lab tests, and we will never pretend otherwise. Instead, we combine several independent sources of evidence:
- Manufacturer specifications: materials and thickness, capacity, wattage, dimensions and weight, heat sources supported (gas, electric, induction), oven-safe temperatures, included accessories, warranty length and care instructions.
- Verified-buyer feedback: we look for consistent patterns across large numbers of owner reviews — recurring praise, common defects, durability complaints and customer-service experiences — rather than individual star ratings.
- Independent authorities: where relevant we check guidance from sources such as the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR and the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service.
- Culinary context: how a tool is traditionally used. A wok for stir-frying, a rice cooker for Japanese short-grain rice or a Dutch oven for no-knead bread each demand different features.
What We Evaluate
1. Performance for the Job
Does the product do its core task well? For cookware we look at material, heat conduction and retention, and stovetop compatibility. For appliances we look at power, capacity, programs and consistency of results reported by owners.
2. Build Quality and Durability
Material grade, construction (for example clad versus disc-bottom stainless steel, or carbon steel gauge in woks), coating type, handle attachment and warranty coverage.
3. Ease of Use and Cleaning
Weight and balance, controls, dishwasher safety, seasoning or maintenance requirements, and how much counter or storage space a product needs.
4. Safety
Safety certifications such as UL or ETL listing for electric appliances, food-contact materials, heat-resistant handles and auto shut-off features.
5. Value
How the feature set, build and warranty compare with similar products in the same class. We do not publish exact prices because they change frequently.
How We Score and Rank
Some guides include an editorial score out of 10. This score is our team’s judgment across the criteria above, weighted for the product category. It is not an Amazon star rating, and it is not a laboratory measurement. Each pick is also assigned a role — such as Best Overall, Best Budget or Best for Small Kitchens — so you can find the option that fits your cooking style.
Keeping Guides Up to Date
Products are discontinued, redesigned and repriced all the time. We review our guides regularly, replace products that are no longer available, and update the publication date when we make meaningful changes.
Independence
Our recommendations are never for sale. Affiliate commissions do not influence which products we include or how we rank them. Read more in our Ethics Policy and Affiliate Disclaimer. Our research is led by Daniel Mercer, Editor-in-Chief.
